Placentino Elementary School Innovation: Expansion of the PlacenTinker Makerspace
At the Sam Placentino Elementary School, the PlacenTinkers Makerspace has received an exciting new and powerful capability this year, thanks to an “Innovations in Education” grant from the Holliston Education Foundation (HEF). As a parent and community group, HEF is committed to supporting excellence and creativity in Holliston schools. Through the installation of an interactive touch panel and teacher training on the educational applications, this grant is enhancing and connecting the learning in Placentino Elementary School’s makerspace. This special learning center in the school library strengthens and enriches elementary level student learning in innovative ways by allowing them to explore, design, create, tinker and collaborate with one another using the principles of Design Thinking.

Technology Integration Specialist Winnie Carey reports that “In January, the Promethean Interactive Panel was used with Google Earth to go from our own Placentino Elementary School to an elementary school in Malawi Africa to learn about making a “galimoto,” a toy from discarded junk…as PlacenTinkers we share the same sense of ingenuity and perseverance!”
Winnie Carey, student Lilliana Canto, and Librarian Lynda Canal talk about the many uses of the new adjustable height touch screen.
