Innovations In Education - Placentino French Immersion

Second grade French Immersion teacher Aaron Snyder took a risk and proposed an innovative idea for his classroom - connect, communicate and jointly work on projects with a French Immersion classroom in Sage Creek in Manitoba, Canada.  Students in M. Snyder’s class became "tour guides" to help students in Mme. Nycol’s class learn all about Holliston and what makes it special to them. Students in Mme. Nycol’s class helped students in the Holliston class by sharing all about Sage Creek. Students used a variety of technologies and other materials to help each other learn about the customs, traditions and unique aspects of their respective towns. They selected landmarks, interviewed people in town, and talked with their families to learn about what made them choose to live where they currently live. This project supports the history/social studies framework for elementary education, and also enhances 2nd language acquisition.  It involves student decision making, planning, collaboration, presentations, construction, technology usage and creativity.  They used in-classroom technology to produce their reports and "talk" to Sage Creek students with applications like "Padlet," "Skyping," and "Flipgrid."  By using green screens and video recording, this project has the potential to utilize media centers in the Placentinker Makerspace, Miller's Innovation Lab and Adams Studio 323 Digital Media Makerspace recording capabilities and can be more broadly applied to other classrooms and grades.
